Heading further north, Vasto enchants with its noble elegance: the refined D’Avalos Palace, which tells the story of centuries of aristocracy; the dramatic Caldoresco Castle; and the scenic Loggia Amblingh, where the view stretches across old rooftops, rolling green hills, and the endless blue sea. One of the true treasures of this coastline is its coastal dunes. These aren’t just a natural boundary between land and sea — they’re a real haven of biodiversity: wind-shaped sand formations that host a unique mix of Mediterranean plants like juniper, mastic, rosemary, and hardy pioneer species able to thrive in extreme conditions.

Just behind the beaches lies the majestic pine forest of Petacciato, a peaceful green oasis stretching over 65 hectares. A mix of pines, sandy trails, and shaded spots offers a cool retreat during the hottest hours and invites you to take slow walks, surrounded by the sound of cicadas and rustling leaves.

To the south, near the border with Termoli, there’s a hidden stretch of coastline accessible only on foot. Here, between sand and sea, natural clay deposits emerge from the ground — a rare geological feature that gives the landscape a raw, primordial beauty.

Heading north along the coast, the scenery opens up onto the dramatic Costa dei Trabocchi, starting from Vasto Marina and winding through the province of Chieti. It’s a stunning mix of coves, cliffs, and rocky inlets, nestled within some of the most captivating nature reserves on the Adriatic.

Among them, Punta Aderci stands out — a protected area of extraordinary beauty: golden dunes, pebble beaches, steep cliffs, and cultivated fields that roll gently down to the sea. Along this stretch, you’ll come across the famous trabocchi — old wooden fishing machines that seem to float above the water.

Connecting all these wonders is the Via Verde, a scenic cycling and walking path that follows the old railway line. It winds through vineyards, fields, and sea cliffs, always with the sea beside you — an invitation to travel slowly, in tune with the landscape, and let yourself be inspired by a coast that surprises you at every turn.

In the heart of Molise, food is more than just nourishment — it’s an experience that blends land, memory, and authenticity. In Petacciato and the surrounding area, the flavors are genuine, rooted in the sea and the soil, and capable of telling simple yet deeply meaningful stories. One of the most traditional local dishes is cozzotelli, a variation of cavatelli, short handmade pasta often served with a rich sauce made from local sausage — a symbol of homestyle, comforting cooking meant to be shared.

These and other traditional recipes are celebrated every summer through three local food festivals that bring the town to life. There’s the Sagra dei Fusilli, which honors handmade pasta shaped using an ancient spindle technique; the Sagra delle Scrippelle, dedicated to thin, delicate crepes; and the beloved Sagra della Porchetta, where slow-roasted pork with crispy skin and the deep aroma of herbs and spices takes center stage.

Nearby, especially in San Martino in Pensilis, you can taste the famous pampanella, oven-baked pork infused with generous amounts of chili and spices, bold and unforgettable. Thanks to its proximity to the sea, Petacciato also offers excellent fresh seafood, with grilled fish, seafood appetizers, and soups made from the daily catch served in many local spots.

A short drive away, Termoli welcomes visitors with a rich maritime culinary tradition. Its seafood pasta and the intensely flavorful fish stew alla termolese perfectly capture the soul of the Adriatic. Further north, Abruzzo makes its presence felt with brodetto alla vastese, a deep, generous seafood stew made with a variety of fish — a dish you’ll often find in local menus as well.

From Abruzzo also come two rustic classics that have become part of Petacciato’s everyday table: pallotte cacio e uova, cheese-and-egg balls cooked in tomato sauce, and arrosticini, small skewers of grilled mutton that fill the air with irresistible aromas during summer evenings and festivals.

More broadly, Molise is a land to be tasted. Exceptional cheeses like caciocavallo and stracciata are mainly produced in Alto Molise, where milk is still processed following ancient methods. This is also prime truffle territory, home to some of the finest truffles in Italy — still surprisingly under the radar — that bring rich depth to pastas, meats, and cheeses.

And then there are the quieter yet essential ingredients of Molise’s food culture: bread, olive oil, and honey. The extra virgin olive oil, made from native olive varieties and cultivated with care, has an honest, intense flavor.
